My South America Journey - A Brief Summary - Part 2

Dec. 26, 2024

Traveling through South America gives you an interesting exploration of many different cultures, histories, and languages. Having visited and lived in multiple countries across the continent, I've come to appreciate the distinct variations not just in accents, but also in everyday language, as influenced by the region's colonial past, European immigration, and indigenous cultures.

Apartment issues, school progress

June 20, 2013

I should try to do a better job of remembering some of the things that happen day to day. One evening I was out with George and his family, we walked a few blocks away to eat dinner at a small roadside food stand. Very good papas and empanadas. While we were just ordering our food I something drop out of the tree above us. Just caught a glimpse of it out of the corner of my eye. It rolled under the cart so I didn't know what it was. George told me is was a mango.

Santa Marta, sunburn, new apartment

June 13, 2013

Last sunday I visited a small tourist city about an hour bus ride away - Santa Marta. It's southeast of Barranquilla. The drive there takes you thru the playa, I guess that would be the same as a delta, then along the beach and finally into Santa Marta. There is a big mountain range on one side and the Caribean on the other side. I didn't really see much of the city itself as we spent our time at the beach.

My first week in Barranquilla

June 6, 2013

I moved out of the hotel in downtown to a less expensive hotel on the south side of town. The area is called Soledad. The hotel here is much cheaper.

This week has been mostly exploring and learning the area, where the shopping centers are, etc.

In Barranquilla

June 3, 2013

I know I should have posted here a few days ago but haven´t had a very good time with internet cafe´s and the computers in them. I don´t have my computer here, as it was going to be shipped ocean freight with some other stuff, including my sax, but that wasn´t possible. Then I checked in to shipping air freight but that was prhibitively expensive (between $6000 and $7000). So I have no computer yet and am relying on internet cafe´s.
