I came across a meme on LinkedIn recently that made a fairly bold claim about music:
“Music isn't just entertainment. It's neurological intervention. The right song can shift your emotional state in under 30 seconds. It bypasses your rational brain entirely and speaks directly to your limbic system. Curate playlists for specific moods. It's a free pharmacy.”
As a musician, I agree with the basic premise. Music can affect us. Sometimes dramatically.
But some of the neuroscience language in that little paragraph made me stop and wonder whether the person who wrote it actually understands what they're talking about.
“Bypasses your rational brain entirely and speaks directly to your limbic system.”
What does that even mean? I certainly don't know. And I'm reasonably certain the human brain isn't divided into a rational section that music sneaks around like a burglar climbing through a window. The brain is considerably more complicated than that.
Music can affect emotion, memory, attention, arousal, reward, and a whole assortment of other processes. Plenty of research shows that music can produce measurable psychological and physiological responses. But reducing all of that to “music bypasses the rational brain and talks directly to the limbic system” makes for a great meme and a rather lousy explanation.
The “limbic system” itself has become something of a celebrity in popular neuroscience. It's often presented as though it's the brain's little emotional control room, complete with switches labeled happy, sad, angry, and nostalgic. Real neuroscience isn't nearly that tidy. Emotion doesn't happen in one isolated part of the brain. It results from complicated interactions among multiple systems.
So I'd be skeptical whenever somebody explains something as complicated as human emotion with a sentence that sounds like it came from a motivational poster written by a neurologist. That doesn't mean the underlying idea is wrong.
Quite the opposite.
Music absolutely can change how we feel. I've experienced it countless times. Most musicians have. Most people have. Put on the right song when you're in a lousy mood and, sometimes, within a few seconds you're feeling different. Maybe you're not happy, exactly, but you're less miserable. Maybe you're energized. Maybe calmer. Maybe nostalgic. Maybe suddenly ready to clean the entire house for reasons you cannot explain.
But here's the important distinction:
If your car breaks down, listening to your favorite song isn't going to fix the car.
If you've argued with somebody you love, music isn't going to magically resolve the argument.
If you're worried about money, your favorite album isn't going to make the bills disappear.
The problem remains. What has changed is your emotional response to the problem. And sometimes that's enough. Sometimes you don't need the problem solved immediately. You need enough distance from it to think clearly. You need your emotional temperature turned down a few degrees. You need your head to stop spinning long enough to decide what to do next.
Music can sometimes do that. But it's also temporary.
That's something the LinkedIn meme conveniently leaves out.
The song ends. The mood may eventually return. Whatever caused the original crappy mood is still sitting there waiting for you.
That's not a criticism of music. It's simply reality.
Music doesn't necessarily cure anything. It can give you a break from it. And sometimes a break is remarkably useful.
I use music quite a bit when I write.
And I don't listen to the kind of soft, atmospheric, instrumental music that seems to be the prescribed soundtrack for writers these days.
Sometimes it's The Moody Blues.
Sometimes Aerosmith
Sometimes Black Oak Arkansa.
Sometimes ELP, ELO, Nightwish, or Roy Buchanan.
Right at this moment: Alvin Lee. In other words, my carefully curated writing soundtrack can apparently be diagnosed only as “old guy.” music.
The music is generally playing quietly in the background. I'm not sitting there analyzing the lyrics or air-guitaring my way through a guitar solo while trying to write a chapter. It simply becomes part of the environment. And I've found another benefit that has little to do with mood.
I have tinnitus.
There is a persistent fuzzy noise in my head that doesn't particularly care whether I'm trying to write, sleep, concentrate, or do anything else. Sometimes it's more noticeable than other times. Low-volume music can help mask some of that noise. More importantly, it gives my auditory system something else to latch onto. Instead of having that fuzzy internal noise sitting there by itself, I have familiar music occupying the auditory background.
And because the music is familiar, it doesn't necessarily demand my attention. That's useful when I'm writing.
The music doesn't have to inspire the scene I'm working on. It doesn't have to make me feel some particular emotion. It doesn't even have to have anything to do with what I'm writing. Sometimes it simply helps create an environment in which my brain is more comfortable doing the work. And I've written several short stories based on songs, that's quite fun.
So, all of that is a considerably less glamorous explanation than “neurological intervention.” But it happens to be the one that matches my experience.
There's another problem with the idea of “the right song.” There isn't one. At least, not universally. One person's emotional medicine is another person's auditory torture.
Play a particular song for one person, and you might bring back a wonderful memory from twenty years ago. Play it for someone else, and you've just dragged them back into the worst breakup of their life.
Music can make us happy.
It can make us sad.
It can make us angry.
It can make us nostalgic.
It can make us want to dance.
It can make us want to be alone.
It can even make us cry.
And crying isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes the song that makes you cry is exactly the song you needed to hear.
That's another reason I'm wary of calling music a “free pharmacy.” Pharmaceuticals are generally expected to have reasonably predictable effects when properly administered. Music doesn't work that way.
The same song can produce entirely different reactions in different people, or even in the same person at different points in their life.
A song you loved at twenty might leave you cold at sixty. A song you couldn't stand ten years ago might suddenly become meaningful because of something that happened in the meantime. The music hasn't changed. You have.
I understand why people use phrases like “music is medicine.” It's catchy. It's memorable. And there is legitimate research into the therapeutic uses of music. But I don't think we need to dress music up as medicine to appreciate what it does.
Music has been affecting human beings for thousands of years. Long before anyone knew what a neuron was, people understood that music could change the atmosphere in a room, bring people together, encourage movement, accompany grief, celebrate love, stir patriotism, frighten us, calm us, and transport us somewhere else entirely.
We don't need to pretend that music is sneaking past our rational brain and whispering directly into our limbic system. We can simply acknowledge that the human brain responds to music in remarkably complex ways.
And perhaps the most useful way to think about it is this:
You're still dealing with whatever caused the storm.
But sometimes you need the clouds to break for a while.
Sometimes you need something to occupy the noise in your head.
Sometimes you need a song to remind you who you were.
Sometimes you need one to remind you who you still are.
And sometimes you just want to hear The Doobie Brothers while you write.
That's probably reason enough.
